Paul’s Scripture: The Old Testament Background of Romans   – Chandler Stokes

The Apostle Paul received “his gospel by revelation, but he reasoned it out in the only terms that really counted in his context, namely in terms of Scripture.  Scripture meant what we call the Old Testament, which of course for Paul was the only Scripture there was.  For Paul, as for all his Judean contemporaries, if what he taught couldn’t be validated in Scripture, it couldn’t be true.” (R. B. Coote)   Paul considered his “gospel” the authentic exposition of the meaning of the Old Testament, “promised beforehand through God’s prophets in the sacred writings (Romans 1:2).”  The goal of our class will be to uncover the background to Paul’s thought in the sacred writings.  We will explore the figures of Abraham, Moses, and others, as well as the books of Isaiah, Habakkuk, and more.

Chandler Stokes
is Pastor and Head of Staff at First Presbyterian Church of Oakland, California.  He is also adjunct faculty member at San Francisco Theological Seminary in Biblical Studies where, as a Ph.D. student, he co-taught Old and New Testament.  For many years he served as instructor in Biblical Greek, and has at various times taught Latin and Hebrew—as well as co-taught a course in homiletics called Biblical Preaching

Christian Citizenship for Planet Earth - Carol Robb

U S citizens are the butt of world sarcasm because our government’s leaders communicate that economic growth in the U S is more important than addressing the climate  change  to  which  we are contributing.  And yet, U S citizens, who contribute about 20 tons of CO2 per capita per year would need to shrink our carbon footprint by  80% to reach the projected world average allowable for a sustainable level of CO2, which is 4.1 tons per capita.  This challenge is rather daunting.  But it is only fair that we meet the challenge.  We will use the class to support each other in learning  how to become citizens of Planet  earth;  explore some Biblical  resources for  being  earth citizens; identify key issues in climate change politics; and name some practices that are operable and feasible depending on the requirements of our different lives.

Carol Robb is Professor of Christian Social Ethics at San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.  She has consulted with the World Council of Churches Climate Change Programme and teaches a class in Environmental Ethics for persons preparing for church ministries.  She is writing a book on Biblical resources for reflecting on the ethics of climate change policies.

When Politics and Religion Collide: Current Realities in Israel and Palestine  -  Monica  Styron

Rev. Styron’s experiences in Israel/Palestine include six months she worked in Jerusalem with SABEEL. She will relate what she witnessed, reflections and stories, with emphasis on the background of the conflict, the support and/or collision between politics and religion, Christian Zionism, and opportunities for engaging in the peace process both here in the US and internationally.  She will also share her impressions of the present day realities of Palestinians living under occupation, how Christian Palestinians are responding and surviving, how the church international is responding to the crisis (i.e., CPT, WCC), Jewish groups against occupation (secular, religious, and military), and what we can do to assist Christians in the Holy Land.

Monica Styron has an M.Div. degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, and was ordained in 1976. She has been Director/Co-founder MMWW, Washington DC; pastor of congregations in Cambridge and Lynn, MA,  and Kennebunk, ME, Pastoral Counselor (Interfaith Counseling Services and New England Deaconess Hospital - both in Boston), Executive Director of Marin Interfaith Youth Outreach, San Rafael, and  Interim pastor, Point Reyes.  Monica has been actively involved in Jewish-Christian dialogue for over 30 years and Muslim-Christian dialogue for 18 years. She has been on several delegations to Palestine/Israel since 1989, and in 2006 was a Mission Volunteer at Sabeel  Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center in East Jerusalem.

From the Trust of Abraham into the Trust of Christ   - Herman Waetjen

Paul's Letter to the Romans is his theological legacy to the world.  It is the first publication of the Christian Church.  In it Abraham is distinguished as the grand patriarch of all human beings because he lived and acted in the trust of God.  That trust becomes the foundation of justification by faith/trust.  But as Paul continues in his theological reflections, there is much more beyond that doctrine.  It is nothing less that the healing of brokenness, the sovereignty of "ruling in life, and the eradication of sin.”

Herman Waetjen is Robert S. Dollar Emeritus Professor of New Testament at San Francisco Theological Seminary, where he taught for 34 years.  He is the author of Praying the Lord’s Prayer and books on the gospels of Mark, Matthew and John.  His most recent book, published in 2005, is The Gospel of the Beloved Disciple, an in-depth study of the Gospel of John.

Onward from San Jose: Reflecting on the 218th General Assembly  – Tricia Dykers Koenigs

Every General Assembly is significant in the life of the PCUSA, and the 218th GA (2008), which will adjourn only eight days before our conference opens, will be no exception.   How will the GA's actions affect ordained service by LGBT persons?  Who will be the new Stated Clerk?   How will the denomination be affected by schismatic congregations?  What will be the Church's witness on issues of peace and justice?   Will the presbyteries be considering a new Form of Government?  What other issues will be prominent?  How did we get where we are, and where do we go from here?  We will discuss what happened at the General Assembly in San José - background, actions, and prospects.

Tricia Dykers Koenig, a certified "GA junkie,” has been National Organizer for the Covenant Network of Presbyterians - "toward a church as generous and just as God's grace" - since October 2000.   Prior to joining the Covenant Network staff, she co-pastored congregations in Iowa and Ohio.  She is a graduate of Duke University and McCormick Theological Seminary.

Seasons, SoulCollage®, & the Four-Fold Path    –   Marjorie Hoyer Smith

Using themes found in Dr. Alexander Shaia’s book Beyond the Biography of Jesus: The Journey of Quadratos, each day we’ll explore a different season of the spiritual journey represented by one of the Gospels and expressed through SoulCollage.
            * The season of autumn, the summons, the Gospel  of  Matthew, the question: how do we face change?
            * The season of winter, the wilderness, the Gospel of Mark, the question: how do we endure suffering?
            * The season of spring, the garden, the Gospel of John, the question: how do we receive joy?
            * The season of summer, the road, the Gospel of Luke, the question: how do we serve?
Poetry, music, silence, meditation, prayer and sharing will assist us in our explorations.

SoulCollage is an intuitive collage process that is engaging and profound. Photo images from magazines are selected, then cut and arranged (and rearranged), to be glued onto 5-1/4 x 8-inch matte boards. The created pieces become prayer cards – a visual witness to your spiritual journey. Using the seasonal themes, each card made will represent a part of your life  story in relation to God, others, and the world.

Marjorie Hoyer Smith is a spiritual director, a retreat leader, and on staff of the Bread of Life Center’s 3-year Internship Program in the Art of Spiritual Direction. Marjorie often integrates artistic expressions into her personal faith journey as well as her professional work. She received her SoulCollage Facilitator Training through Seena B. Frost, author and creator of SoulCollage®. Marjorie's adaptation of the SoulCollage process to include a contemplative dimension allows participants to draw close to God in prayer and meditation.
